Move along with your memory

According to the United States Census Bureau, people on average move house 11 times in their lifetime. People move for different reasons. For example, refugees try to escape from war, students move to the city to study, and workers move to the city for work. Some simply move in search of better living quality.

Some people might recognize the experience when you just move to a new space and feeling like they don't belong here. Things that people feel familiar with are no longer there. It could be the furniture, the wall hanger where you put your coat, or the window where sunlight shines through in the afternoon. These users' experiences form  memories and then a sense of belonging.

Based on my personal experience of moving, I look back to the rooms that I lived in before. Finding the common elements and the key to building up a sense of belonging. This research helps me to create a system that helps people quickly find out what elements they need to build up a space with a sense of belonging.

My goal

Memory has played a crucial role throughout the ages.

What makes each individual so unique is because of our experiences and memories from the moment we were born to the present day that shaped us into who we are today. Architecture is a carrier of memory and accompanies human beings for a long time. People living in a building leave traces in that space, and as different people live and use this space, memories are accumulated.

My research paper and design are aimed at religious buildings and homes that are closely related to people's basic life. Studying the preservation and restoration of historic buildings and connecting what I have learned to my own experience, is my research goal. As an interior designer, I want to apply what I have learned to my future design and hope that in the future people will be able to realize that our memory is the bridge between architecture and people.
