Hans-Hannah
Hannah van der Schaaf

She must have been 4 years old, when she wanted to become a clown. Today one can wonder if Hans-Hannah became a clown.

In her practice she creates a tension between discomfort, intimacy, politics and entertainment. She playfully forces the spectator the become part of the work, of a system. Within this system hierarchical power structures are getting the overhand. It might feel as if we (wealthy countries) are living in freedom, we have everything our ancestresses ever wanted. We live in the utopian world from the medieval times. Or did we move beyond this utopian world? Did we end up in a time where the things we desired for are having controle over us? We are confronted with consuming good and taglines every day. Within today's society one forgets that we are in essence all connected to each other. We are all part of a big factory. Where desire is something that brings us together instead of separating us. From this idea Hans-Hannah creates tactile and playful happenings that opens up towards new possibilities and a way to find back the engine of the factory that connects.

In her work “ The winner “ she plays with how big corporations are controlling our behavior towards each other. Where a lot of taglines from politicians and advertisements are stating that they are the best, or that you should be the best. Where performative society is leading our way of viewing each other. Within the work one can enter into a box. If you let your head rest on the headrest a song starts to play. A song about how good you are. You are better than the rest, you can do whatever you desire , because your worth it. While you are in the box you are confronted with yourself in the mirror. At the same time people can look to you through different wholes. Where she questions the feeling of being the best, and the relation one has with the other.
