Reflections of the Saguaro
Reflections of the Saguaro

Fauve van Tol (NL, 1994), is a visual artist based in the Netherlands. She specializes in ceramics, glass mosaics, sculpting, painting and embroidery. Together with these mixed media techniques she explores the themes of feminism, environmentalism, power dynamics, romance, female rage, and love.

Within her artistic practice she finds inspiration from great forces of nature -such as forests and volcanoes- as well as narratives of unbounded, fearless women she meets in stories, films, and books. She is particularly inspired by tales of women transforming into plants as an act of resistance, finding freedom in the change of body. This inspiration manifests in Fauve’s work through sculpted bodies made of ceramic, mirror mosaic, paintings and glass, creating a unique reality and dreamscape where her own story comes to life. The works are a reflection of her desire to be as free as the forces of nature and the women who inspire her, rooted within a longing to challenge the limitations imposed on her by society.

In her graduation installation “Have you ever seen a desert bloom?” Fauve created one of her dreamscapes, with this one in particular she was inspired by the Sonoran Desert, Arizona. A place where extreme climate conditions meet the landscape and its inhabitants, finding a delicate balance in perfect harmony. The installation contains reflections of bodies growing up to the sky, inviting you into her dream of finding new realities.

Surrounded by sculptures, glass, mirrors, reflections and fluids, she asks you the question: have you ever seen a desert bloom?
