Get your citizen service number before coming to the Netherlands

If you are eligible for student finance, you will receive your citizen service number (BSN) when you apply. Having a BSN allows you to:

  • Apply for a DigiD, which gives you access to the Dutch government’s online services.
  • Log into Mijn DUO to keep track of your student finance, report changes to your situation and view your inbox.
  • In some municipalities, schedule an appointment to register as a resident in the Personal Records Database (BRP).

Please note - this information applies to students who:

  • are eligible for student finance,
  • intend to study in the Netherlands but are not yet resident, and
  • are Dutch nationals or hold a status equal to Dutch citizenship.

For more details and conditions, see the website of the government of the Netherlands.
