Studying or taking an internship abroad broadens your outlook. Various grants are available to help you take this step. Explore the options and find out how to apply.
Erasmus+ grant
You can apply for the Erasmus+ grant if you:
- are a student at ArtEZ
- and want to go on an exchange or take an internship in the EU
- or want to take an internship in the EU after graduating.
The Erasmus+ grant is part of the Erasmus+ programme. It gives you the chance to gain new knowledge and skills. The grant covers the period you spend abroad on an exchange or internship.
At ArtEZ, you can only apply for an Erasmus+ grant for exchanges within the EU. You can also use this grant if you go to: Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Turkey or North Macedonia.
Note: You cannot use the Erasmus+ grant at ArtEZ if you go to Switzerland or the UK.
Conditions:
To qualify for an Erasmus+ exchange grant, you must:
- be enrolled as a full-time student at ArtEZ during your exchange
- choose an institution that is a partner institute of ArtEZ
- study abroad for a period of 3–12 months (up to a maximum of 360 days per study cycle – bachelor's or master’s)
- live and study in the host country for the entire period.
- have approval from the exam board so your exchange counts towards your ArtEZ programme with ECTS credits
- apply for the Erasmus+ study grant at least six weeks before departure
- not receive other EU funds to cover additional costs of studying abroad
- not be an international EU student applying for an exchange in your home country

- be enrolled as a full-time student at ArtEZ during your internship
- have your internship plans approved by your head of programme or internship coordinator
- carry out a full-time internship abroad for a period of 2–12 months (up to a maximum of 360 days per study cycle – bachelor's or master’s)
- live and work in the host country for the entire period
- have approval from the exam board, so your internship counts towards your ArtEZ programme with ECTS credits
- apply for an Erasmus+ traineeship grant at least six weeks before departure
- not be an international EU student applying for internship in your home country

* Graduation means the moment you pass your final exams.
Conditions:
To qualify for a post-graduation internship, you must:
- arrange your internship during the final year of your programme
- complete your Erasmus+ grant application before you graduate (allow at least one month)
- ensure all forms are signed before you graduate
- have your internship plans approved by ArtEZ (for example, your head of programme or internship coordinator)
- carry out a full-time internship abroad (at least 35 hours per week)
- live and work in the host country for the entire period
- complete the internship within one year after graduating (your entitlement lapses after one year)
- respect the Erasmus+ limit of 12 months of funding per study (bachelor’s or master’s, including exchanges and internships)
- not receive other EU funds for the same costs abroad
- not be an international EU student applying for an internship in your home country
Important to know:
- A post graduation internship can last up to two months.
- The end date of your internship must fall within one year after graduating.
- These internships are designed to support your transition into the labour market.
- You do not have to return to the Netherlands afterwards – you may remain in your host country if this is financially feasible

Other exchange possibilities within Erasmus+:
In addition to regular physical exchange, Erasmus+ also offers opportunities for short-term blended exchanges between partner institutions. These combine a physical and a virtual component.
Erasmus+ Inclusion and Travel Support Top-up
If you receive an Erasmus+ grant, you may also be eligible for additional support through one of the top-ups.
The Erasmus+ Inclusion Top-up
This top-up is for students who face barriers to study. For example, if you have limited financial resources, a disability or health problems, you may qualify for extra support.
The Erasmus+ Travel Support Top-up
This top-up is for students who choose sustainable transport to travel to their host country.
What are the conditions?
If you are taking part in the Erasmus+ programme and need some financial support due to exceptional personal circumstances, you are eligible for the Inclusion Top-up if you fall into one of the following categories:
- Disability
- Health problems
- Financial barriers
The examples below provide an idea of the situations that are seen as exceptional. We will always ask you to provide justification.
- Physical disabilities, such as mobility problems
- Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia
- Sensory impairiments, such as visual impairments or hearing impairments
- Chronic diseases, such as epilepsy, rheumatism or diabetes
- Neurodiversity, such as autism or ADHD
- Receiving a supplementary grant from DUO.
What is the amount of the grant?
If your application is approved, you will receive €250 per month in addition to your regular Erasmus+ grant.

What are the conditions for green travel?
If you go on an exchange abroad, you will incur travel costs. You are therefore entitled to reimbursement of travel expenses in addition to the Erasmus+ grant. The amount of this reimbursement depends on the distance travelled: the more kilometres you travel, the higher the amount. You can also receive an additional allowance for travel days before and after your stay abroad (maximum two days – one before and one after the exchange).
In addition to the fixed reimbursement, you may be eligible for supplementary Travel Support if you use a sustainable form of transport for both your outward and return journeys. Examples include travelling by train, bus, boat or bicycle. Because these modes of transport often take longer and can cost more, the grant amounts are higher.

Conditions for sustainable travel:
To receive the supplementary Travel Support, you must provide proof that you travelled sustainably:
- Upload your signed Declaration on Honour in Osiris Student/Stay Abroad, stating that you will travel sustainably.
- After your return, upload your tickets in Osiris as proof. Make sure the date, destination and your name are clearly visible. Acceptable proof includes rail, bus or boat tickets (photos or screenshots are allowed).
How to apply:
Once you have followed the steps in the application process, you can request an Erasmus+ grant in Osiris Student/Stay Abroad. Here you can also indicate that you will be travelling sustainably (outward and return). For more details, see the ‘How to apply’ section.

NL Scholarship
The NL Scholarship is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science together with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences.
You can apply if you:
- are a student at ArtEZ, and
- plan to go on an exchange, take an internship or conduct research outside the EU, in Switzerland or in the United Kingdom
To be eligible for an NL Scholarship, you must meet the following conditions:
- You are on a full-time programme at ArtEZ.
- You use the scholarship for study, research or an internship of at least seven weeks and for a minimum of 10 ECTS.
- Your study, research or internship takes place in a country outside the EU.
- You are an excellent student.
- To be eligible for an NL Scholarship, you must meet the following conditions:
- You are on a full-time programme at ArtEZ.
- You use the scholarship for study, research or an internship of at least seven weeks and for a minimum of 10 ECTS.
- Your study, research or internship takes place in a country outside the EU.
- You are an excellent student.
In the 2025 –2026 academic year, the NL Scholarship is a one-off amount of €2,500.
If you want to do an exchange, internship or research in the second semester of the 2025-2026 academic year, you should apply before 1 December 2025. You will find out whether you have been awarded the scholarship before the winter break.
If you want to do an exchange, internship or research in the first semester of the 2026-2027 academic year, you should apply before 1 May 2026. You will find out whether you have been awarded the scholarship at the beginning of June 2026.
You can apply for a programme, internship or research abroad via Osiris Student/Stay Abroad. The Student Affairs department will check whether your destination country is outside the EU. If it is, you will be sent a link enabling you to apply for the NL Scholarship. In this application environment we will ask you to upload a motivation letter (maximum of two pages). We will also ask you to upload a recommendation letter.
Tips for a good recommendation letter:
- Ask the head of your programme to write a recommendation letter. This should clearly state that you are an excellent student.
- You can strengthen your application by adding any prizes or awards that you have received.
- If you have taken part in exhibitions, concerts or other events, make sure you also include these.
After receiving your documents, the scholarship committee will assess your application and decide whether you are eligible for the NL Scholarship.

VSBfonds grant
VSBfonds believes in passionate and motivated students who want to keep learning and growing. That's why VSBfonds offers a large number of scholarships to students who want to study or do research abroad. For this scholarship, your motivation and care for your community are more important than your grades.
You can apply for this grant if you:
- are a Dutch national or have a demonstrable connection with the Netherlands;
- will graduate soon or have just graduated;
- wish to do a follow-up programme or research inside or outside the EU.
A new round of applications for the VSBfonds grant starts every autumn.
Some of the conditions are:
- Your Dutch graduation date is between 1 March 2023 and 31 December 2026.
- Your follow-up study abroad starts between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2027.
- Your follow-up study lasts a minimum of three and a maximum of 24 consecutive months.

Note: Internships are not eligible for this grant. If you would like to take an internship after graduating, you can do so in many cases through the Erasmus+ programme.
The VSBfonds grant is worth up to €10,000. The final amount depends on your study plan and budget. The maximum of €10,000 is only awarded for programmes lasting two academic years. For all other programmes the maximum is €7,000.
VSBfonds believes it is important that students who have a disability can also study abroad. They may be able to apply for a higher grant. For this, you should contact Barbara Heutink, your ArtEZ contact person.
You can apply up to 1 March inclusive. There is one round of applications per year.
If you meet the conditions, you can apply directly via the VSBfonds website.
Tip: You can apply before you know for certain whether you have been admitted to the university or university of applied sciences of your choice. To increase your chances, we recommend applying to several institutions, possibly in different countries.
ArtEZ handles the initial selection round, which takes place from March to early April. The process has a written and an oral phase:
- If you pass the written phase, you will be invited for an interview with the ArtEZ selection committee.
- In the selection we pay particular attention to your engagement with your community and your motivation.
- It is also important to provide a realistic budget. You can find examples of costs in different countries on the VSBfonds website.
If you are selected for the VSBfonds grant and do not have proof of admission, you can be awarded the grant on a conditional basis. If you are ultimately not admitted, your grant will lapse.
