Financial matters

Calculate tuition fees

The amount of tuition you pay depends on your situation. In most cases, you’ll pay the statutory tuition fee. In some situations, you’ll pay the higher institutional fee. For example, if you’re studying for a second bachelor’s degree. Curious about what your tuition fee would be?

Funding options for teacher training programmes

If you are going to follow a teacher training (education in art) programme, there are often more ways to pay for your studies than just with regular student finance. DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs) has various schemes for students who want to become teachers. You can find everything clearly laid out in the selection guide ("Keuzewijzer”) on the DUO website. Below is a summary of what might be possible. Some of these schemes are only available to Dutch or EU citizens, or under specific conditions.

Student finance

If you’re pursuing a HBO bachelor for the first time, you will likely be eligible for the standard student finance: a basic grant, supplementary grant, loan, and the student travel product.

Teacher allowance

If you no longer qualify for student finance (including a loan or student travel product), you may still be eligible for the teacher allowance, which you do not have to repay. Check the DUO website for the conditions.

Teacher grant

If you are already working in education and you hold a teaching qualification (such as a completed PABO or teacher training), you may qualify for the teacher scholarship. This helps cover tuition, study costs, and travel. In some cases, your employer can receive subsidies so you can get study leave.

Additional student finance

If you already have a HBO or university degree and now would like to pursue a teacher training programme, you may be eligible for an additional year of student finance. This could be in the form of a grant or loan and gives you access to the student travel product for that year.

Lifelong Learning Credit

Are you no longer eligible for the above schemes and still need to pay for (part of) your studies? Then you can borrow money through the Lifelong Learning Credit. This is a loan from DUO on favourable terms.

Scholarships, grants and other financial support

There are different ways to get financial support during your studies in the Netherlands. For Dutch and EU/EEA students, this may include student finance from DUO or the lifelong learning credit. If you are an international student from outside the EU/EEA, DUO schemes usually do not apply, but you may qualify for scholarships, grants, or financial arrangements through ArtEZ and other organizations.

Check the overview to see which options best fit your situation.
