SPOTTED: The Linen Project nominated for the Dirk Zeldenrust Sustainability Award 2022

The award, named after the now-deceased Arnhem resident Dirk Zeldenrust, who tirelessly raised awareness for a greener world during his lifetime, is being presented for the fifth time. The Linen Project is a research project by ArtEZ that uses locally grown flax to explore the possibilities for a sustainable, local textile chain, and aims to put an end to the polluting fast-fashion industry.

The award will be presented on Friday afternoon, 25 November. The prize consists of 5,000 euros, and 500 Arnhems Hert, a regional coin.

About the Linen Project

The Linen Project was initiated and set up by Pascale Gatzen. If it is up to Pascale, a more sustainable production chain in fashion starts at the ground. Together with Crafts Council Netherlands, she initiated the Linen Project in 2018. Their goal: to revive local flax growing and linen production. The Linen Project brings together farmers, textile manufacturers and linen enthusiasts to grow local flax, and weave linen cloth together, from seed to finished product. Linen is made from flax fibres; flax is a sustainable crop that has a rich history in the Netherlands. The Linen Project's flax is grown on several plots in the Veluwe and Gelderland regions. The linen cloths are then woven in places like Arnhem. Can it get any more local?

The Linen Project explores not only how to set up a local textile chain, but also how alternatives to the polluting fashion industry could look like.

The nomination is already something to be proud of, but if The Linen Project actually receives the Dirk Zeldenrust Sustainability Award 2022, we will of course update this page!
