Welcome to my House

Every year we throw away about 490 kg of waste per person per year, such as textiles, furniture and utensils. For generations before us, repair was an integral part of everyday life, but this activity has lost its importance. Research shows that we are willing to repair more, and we are more likely to do so when we are emotionally attached to these objects.

Through the lens of childhood memories, Welcome to my House revalues and represents broken objects that were considered waste. Through a playful aesthetic and the use of a universal building grid, these waste materials became potential building blocks. With the use of a simple set of game rules during the design process, these building blocks can be taken apart and reused again.

The collection consists of six objects that depict personal family memories, and as a result make Anna as a maker emotionally bound to them. 'Vlekkenkleed' is an ode to my brothers, who regularly spilled their drink on the tablecloth, and 'Oma’s Kapstok' is a celebration of my grandma's extensive wardrobe. This project is therefore an invitation to revalue our household waste and to look at the broken pieces once again.
