Messing around is uncomfortable – and that’s OK

Messing around without a goal. Without a plan. Just experimenting. That’s exactly what Petra van Brecht embraces, in her art and in her teaching. She’s graduating in Arnhem from the part-time bachelor’s in Fine Art and Design in Education.

Gentle exploring as a way of learning

In her lessons, Petra encourages children to explore what art can be. Not as something lofty or finished. But as something you can discover step by step. By feeling your way through, hesitating, and experimenting. Her artistic research follows the same approach. It centres on what she calls 'messing around'. Gently exploring without aiming to create something specific. Inefficient, elusive. But also inventive and full of potential.

In her studio, Petra works with materials intuitively. Without a fixed plan. Sometimes something takes shape. Sometimes not. And that’s perfectly fine.

It doesn’t have to be beautiful. It doesn’t have to use the best materials. But it often leads to something useful.”

Art-making and education

As both artist and teacher, Petra creates space for discomfort. She helps others approach the unfamiliar - not avoid it. Not knowing what you’re doing? That’s OK. That’s something Petra herself learned during her time at ArtEZ.
