Three universities of the arts in the Eastern Netherlands initially came together to form ArtEZ. Our former colleague Frits Ferres came up with the name, ArtEZ, to represent the three locations: Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle.
Timeline: the history of ArtEZ
1926 - Arnhem Academy of Art is founded. It would later become the Arnhem Academy of Visual Arts.
1930s - Arnhem School of Dance is founded (later Arnhem Dance Academy).
1949 - Academy of Architecture is founded.
1949 - Academy of Art and Industry (AKI) is founded.
1956 - Arnhem Drama School is founded.
1957 - Zwolle School of Music is founded.
1978 - Christian Academy of Visual Arts (CABK) is founded in Kampen.
1986 - CABK merges with the Academy for Expression through Word and Gesture in Kampen and the Zwolle School of Music to form the Constantijn Huygens University of the Arts.
1988 - Arnhem University of the Arts (HKA) is created through the merger of the Drama School, Arnhem School of Music, the Academy of Architecture, Arnhem Dance Academy and the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem.
2002 - Constantijn Huygens, AKI and HKA merge to form ArtEZ University of the Arts.
