Admission requirements

Technological experience is not a strict admission requirement. We find it more important that

  • you have a fascination for digital media and the information society;
  • that you can empathise with others and are curious about the impact of technology on people and society;
  • and that you can look at problems from multiple angles and understand the long-term consequences of actions.

The language of instruction is English. For Dutch-speaking students it is possible to follow the selection procedure in Dutch. They are also allowed to take their exams in Dutch during the course.

If you would like to apply for the bachelor's course Design Art Technology at ArtEZ in Arnhem, you must meet the following conditions:

  • pre-university education (VWO), upper general secondary education (HAVO), secondary vocational education (MBO level 4) or foreign equivalent level of education, or lateral entrant with sufficient technological knowledge and skills.
  • Language requirements apply to this English-language study.
  • You must successfully complete a selection procedure.

Application

After you have applied via Studielink, you will receive an email from the ArtEZ Student Affairs department. In addition, you will receive an email from the course, containing an assignment, which you carry out at home and take with you to the selection. It also contains information about your own work (portfolio) that you have to take with you. In your application, you should specify on what day you would like to do the selection.

Selection

At Design Art Technology, students come from a wide range of backgrounds: national and international, from highschool, secondary vocational education (MBO), other art programs, or university studies. Some are already technically skilled, while others have experience in music, film, gaming, or a strong enthusiasm for internet culture, digital fabrication, or media theory. All these students bring their own knowledge and insights, creating a department culture that provides ample space for everyone to develop themselves as fully as possible.

To encourage this, there are four ways to apply for admission:

Monday June 17 - Deadline portfolio and home assignment (regular admission)
Monday June 24 - Regular admission
Monday June 24 - DATSWAP II

Tuesday July 9 - No Portfolio
Tuesday July 9 - DATSWAP III

1. Regular Admission: Home assignment, admission assignment, portfolio and interview

During regular admission, you will receive two home assignments. You will upload the process and results, and based on our evaluation, you will be invited for an admission day at the program in Arnhem. The admission process includes an assignment that you complete in half a day, and we will then discuss this along with your home assignments and portfolio during your interview. By the end of the day, you will know if you have been accepted.

Tip: Bring as much different work as possible. For example, self-made videos, music, sketches, a drone, or maybe even a game you created once.

The interview is a ten-minute conversation with the admissions committee. This discussion will cover your motivation and interest in the field. International students will have this interview via a video call.

Your next opportunity for regular admission is on:

  • Monday, June 24, 2024 - Portfolio and home assignment due by Monday, June 17

2. Workshop Admission: try out the study and do the admission simultaneously

This is a combination of an extended study try out day and an admission process. In one day, you will create a new media art piece using the software TouchDesigner. You will develop an idea, learn the basics of TouchDesigner, and create different versions of a new work. At the end of the day, you will present the process and the result. The new work will be a perfect addition to your portfolio.

During the day, you will talk with teachers and students and can ask questions. At the end of the day, you will find out if you are directly admitted or if you need to complete an additional assignment.

Your next opportunity for a workshop admission is on:

  • Saturday, May 25, 2024

3. DATSWAP: a quick switch to Design Art Technology

We have a lot of experience with students who initially started at another course at an art academy, became curious about Design Art Technology along the way, and eventually made the switch. This is formalized in the DATSWAP - a thirty-minute conversation where you explain your reasons and together we assess if and where you could enter Design Art Technology. You bring work from your current course and generally do not need to complete an assignment. If you already have your propaedeutic certificate, there's even the possibility to start in the second year.

Your next opportunity for a DATSWAP admission is on:

  • Monday, June 24
  • Tuesday, July 9

4. No Portfolio

In some cases, the term "portfolio" can lead to the misconception that a significant amount of visual work is required for admission. Although this is preferred, we offer the No Portfolio admission option. Candidates have the necessary educational level but have not yet had the opportunity to build a portfolio. This admission process includes a more comprehensive home assignment and a thirty-minute interview at the academy. By the end of the day, you will know if you have been accepted.

  • Tuesday, July 9

Result and validity

Within three working weeks you will be notified whether you qualify for admission. If you are rejected, we will try to explain the reasons why. An admission is only valid for the course for which you have applied. If you want to apply for a course or specialisation at a different location, you must go through the admission procedure separately. The admission is only valid for the academic year immediately following the entrance examination.
