Curatorial Practices in Music

In brief

With confusion and uncertainty about the future ringing everywhere, there is a significant need in the music industry to rethink the relationships between music and its audiences, develop new hybrid formats with corresponding financial structures, and connect musical goals with influential themes of modern life. This is where good curatorship comes in handy. But what exactly is ‘curating’, and what is 'the curatorial' in music? ArtEZ is exploring ways to collectively and individually redefine what it means to be a performer, facilitator, creative producer and curator of music and what it can potentially mean. What does the work of a music curator involve? How can you use curatorship to strengthen the core of your own musical practice? Which values and functions of music would you like to explore and develop further?

This is Curatorial Practices in Music at ArtEZ:

  • Inspirational guest speakers present best practices and, who knows, perhaps also epic failures to learn from
  • Weekly lectures provide examples of relevant information and current ideas in music curation
  • Exchange views with experts and colleagues on current issues in the areas of curating, diversity, audience development, performance innovation and performance formats
  • Transform your own musical practice based on a broad musical and social context
  • Strengthen your professional network and put your ideas into practice
  • Choose one or both parts of the programme: Defining your Vision and Curatorial Leadership and Management
  • Course at master's level.
