Elise Bodt

Having a background in Mathematics and Industrial Design, the working method of Elise Bodt is centred on structure and logic. Her process begins with diving into specific research and theory in order to look for patterns or structures to apply to her designs. Next to that, she has an interest in the more spiritual, or holistic approach to life. In her own words: “I aim to translate technology into a story”.

Research Project

In the process of writing her thesis, Elise became obsessed with finding a way to make our smartphones less intrusive in our lives. For her research project, she decided to focus on the smartphone’s interface, mainly the operating system. After concluding that the OS is designed with the objective to catch as many eyeball-hours as possible, she realised that the OS itself could provide the answer to her search. Her work is a proposition for a new OS, which is developed with the user’s best interest in mind. This new operating system nudges the user to spend less time on their phone. It also has a built-in Detox Mode, which strips the OS down to its bare essentials. The following video can be seen as a promotion for this new type of OS.

Practical Assignment

Commissioned by NXP Semiconductors

For her graduation project, commissioned by NXP, Elise made a 2D wall-sculpture that represents the history and milestones of the company of NXP. She dove into the fundamentals of the techniques that NXP uses for making integrated circuits. Here, she discovered logic gates, which represent building blocks for the underlying logic of the circuits of microchips. The symbolic representation of the logic gates fascinated her and she decided to translate the milestones and decision points of the history of NXP into these logic gate symbols. This artwork emerged by sculpting the symbols back into a connected timeline. Currently, the sculpture is installed in one of the conference rooms at NXP Nijmegen.
