Underneath my pelt

In their art practice, Jessica sketches out fragments that challenge the separation between body and mind. Jessica touches on themes like the animalistic, the organic and embedded history within the human body. Taking the body as a compass, Jessica recognizes the alienation that arises from communicating with the body from the mind's perspective. Jessica uses the body in its/their literal and symbolic meaning, seeing the skin as surface where thoughts are conscious, while the layers underneath are the base from where these thoughts arise. There it remains mysterious and daunting at times, like the subconscious mind.

For them, art is a place where the non-dual can be visualized, as non-duality is difficult to express through language but is, in their opinion, a big part of the human experience which always roots itself in the body.

They touch upon the subjects of the physical and the mental, the separated and the connected, the alien and the familiar, matter and mind.

Oil on paper, 30x42 cm

The corelation between organic shapes within and outside the self makes me curious to the possible experience of organs and the organic outside the own body, what do shapes tell about their inner life?

Oil on canvas 139x199 cm, in progress

What postures are known to us and how can bodily positions create an awareness of the totality of our being? How can we think outside of our rationality? What stories are being told through our bodies?

Oil on paper 42x30 cm

When we turn inwards, look into stillness and objectify matter, life freezes. Compelling and resistant feelings arise.

White and grey pencil on paper 34x24 cm

In my drawings shapes are being formed with the paper, often the one flows into the other and beginning nor ends seem to be present. Organic insides and outsides (and the borders between), decay and growth, they all flow into a totality with each other.
