Is the tongue a living parasite in our body? Or a genogram of our autonomy? Or is it the core soul of our body that represents the cycle of life and death? In her practice, Lesse Melijn van der Veer questions the “truth” of the tongue through the contradicting concepts of science and religion. Ask yourself, do you truly know what your tongue looks like; how long is it, how does it make its way through your body until it comes out on the other end, and are you really sure that it isn’t a living entity?

Lesse, a mad scientist, cleric, and an entertainer, collects maps of digestion systems, trying to research the individual’s vision of their own anatomy. Another work is existing of sessions of tongue yoga, where the participant is trained to become fully aware of their tongue, to gain authority of the living parasite. Lesse’s artistic character is somewhat comedic and seems to give it a sense of absurdity when it comes to both scientific and religious beliefs. It might look light hearted and free minded on the front, but once diving into her mad world of scientific and religious belief, her artistic practice starts to break open the universal abstraction of submitting to what the “truth” is.
