Student Thijs Mooij at work in the Fundatie during ‘At Home with Ter Borch’

  • Fine Art

How does a young artist work today? At Museum de Fundatie, Comic Design student Thijs Mooij gives a close-up view of his creative process. As part of the exhibition At Home with Ter Borch, the exhibition spaces at Museum de Fundatie have been temporarily transformed into studios.

Visitors can not only view art, but also experience how contemporary artists work. The project ties in with the exhibition At Home with Ter Borch – Artist Family in Zwolle, which focuses on the creative dynamics of the 17th-century Ter Borch family. Just as in the past, artists and students learn from and with each other and from the public.

One of them is Thijs Mooij (2003), a fourth-year Comic Design student at the ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design. Thijs works with oil paint and lets his stories emerge during the painting process. He gives comic art a unique interpretation, combining painting and narrative imagery. In the Fundatie studio, he is working towards his graduation project. During the opening, Thijs also had the honour of shaking hands with King Willem-Alexander when he officially opened the exhibition in the Academiehuis Grote Kerk in Zwolle.

Thijs's work will be on display at the Fundatie until 3 November. After that, Eva Janssen (Illustration Design student) will take over the studio. The project is part of the Ter Borch Year, during which various programmes at the ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design are creating new work inspired by the Zwolle-based family of artists. Keep an eye on our ArtEZ calendar for more events.
