If you happen to walk through Antwerp anytime soon and see an artist at work on the streets, you might have come across Iris ter Horst, Illustration Design student at the academy of art & design in Zwolle! Indebuurt Zwolle encountered the third-year student as she boarded the train with her vase. “I made this myself,” she says proudly.

Illustration is a course with a lot of freedom in form, ranging from animation and photography to – in Iris’s case – ceramics. The Illustration Design course goes far beyond traditional illustration. Students are challenged to find their own unique, authentic visual language. There is also a strong focus on research and personal motivation.
For Iris, this means she wants to use her vase to explore how people respond to making art in a public space. “I want to finish my vase in a busy location, so the environment becomes part of the story I want to tell.”
