PAN back on the roof of the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Enschede
- Music
PAN, the iconic centrepiece of the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Enschede, has been returned to its rightful place. After months away, the god of music is back on its familiar perch. Its return was celebrated with a performance by Academy of Pop Music student Merlijn Dewasme.

PAN's absence had been a real talking point in Enschede these past few months. But we're delighted to announce that the sculpture has returned to its accustomed spot.
Who is PAN?

We're talking about the six-metre-high sculpture of a young musical god, PAN, which its creators, Spacecowboys, made a big splash with at the IJsselbiennale in 2017. The artwork is inspired by a figure from Greek mythology. Back then, Rob Kramer, the academy's director and the driving force behind it, wanted PAN to give the conservatoire a more recognisable presence in the city. And it worked! PAN has been an unmissable part of Enschede's street scene since 2018.
A renovation
When the sculpture was taken down six months ago, locals were puzzled. What had happened to PAN? Over the past half-year, PAN has undergone a thorough restoration by its creators, Spacecowboys. Now, the sculpture is back to inspire not just students, but the entire city, all over again.
A festive welcome
On Thursday morning, May 8th, PAN was welcomed back with a musical accompaniment by Academy of Pop Music student Merlijn Dewasme. Students, staff, and the people of Enschede gathered to witness its reinstallation and celebrate its return.
