The publication Way Down West by Victoria Lum, alumna of the master’s programme Werkplaats Typografie, has been selected by both the professional and student juries for The Best Dutch Book Designs 2024.

Together with film archivist Didi Yitong Liang, Lum created a book that not only stands out for its visual design but also contributes meaningfully to current discussions around film archiving and technology. The jury praised the combination of content, design and execution – the very essence of what The Best Dutch Book Designs celebrates.

Way Down West
Way Down West is a case study of the silent film 西廂記 (Xīxiāngjì) and explores how film artefacts can carry a transnational identity. The book invites broader reflection on curatorial practices and the impact of technological change in the world of film archives.
Victoria Lum edited and designed the publication, which was published by Werkplaats Typografie. On Instagram, she shared that credit is also due to Jung Lee Type Foundry, whose typeface Joseleen 2018 features prominently throughout the book.
Best Dutch Book Designs
Each year, a professional and student jury select the 33 best-made books in the Netherlands; books that distinguish themselves through design, production and content. The 2024 selection will be exhibited in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in autumn 2025 and will then travel to various venues nationally and internationally.
Way Down West is also shortlisted for the ‘Best Book Design from all over the World’, an internationally recognised design award within the field of book design.
