Yannic Nierkens graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor’s in Moving Image from AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design in Enschede. He did so with his documentary Echte Liefde, which delves into the world of reborn dolls. The documentary will be broadcast on Saturday, September 14th on NPO2 via 2Doc Makers van Morgen.
Reborn dolls
Reborn dolls are baby dolls made to look so lifelike that they appear real. While many find their realistic appearance unsettling, there are enthusiasts who love to care for and collect these dolls. These collectors often face disapproval and even hatred, sometimes from their closest family, and form online communities to find understanding and connection.
No sensation seeker
For his research, Yannic met people whose lives are in some way connected to reborn dolls. “Artists, reborners, and of course collectors—I met them all. You need to make your intentions clear. My goal is to provide a deeper understanding of reborn dolls, without coming across as a sensationalist. This topic is often sensationalized, while many collectors simply find the dolls beautiful, without any deep or dramatic backstory, or without necessarily seeking comfort from them. It’s like buying a car.”
