The New Texeco is dedicated to collaborating and developing expertise in sustainability within the fashion and textile industry over the next eight years. Thanks to a SPRONG subsidy from Regieorgaan SIA, the research group has received a boost to further strengthen their research and collaboration. The community took their first steps in their newly strengthened collaboration with a successful and inspiring introduction meeting between participating universities of applied sciences and designers.

New Texeco: together towards a sustainable fashion industry?

By 2050, the textile sector must be fully circular according to European directives. To achieve this goal and address issues such as overproduction and poorly recyclable textile products, the New Texeco is taking a systemic approach to designing textiles that meet functional and aesthetic requirements for both clothing and interior design. Sustainable, circular, and regenerative value chains are integral to this approach, spanning from raw material extraction and production to consumption and (re)use, with design playing a central role.

Jeroen van den Eijnde (Professorship Tactical Design) and Daniëlle Bruggeman (Professorship Fashion) are the coordinators of the New Texeco. New Texeco stands for New Textile Ecosystems and is comprised of professors from ArtEZ, Saxion, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, as well as 32 consortium partners: fashion and textile companies, designers from the creative sector, and public organizations such as State of Fashion and Modepartners025, and MBO knowledge institution RijnIJssel.

In the coming years, we will have to make significant national and international strides, particularly within the most polluting sectors such as textiles. Sustainable, circular, and regenerative design will play a key role."
Jeroen van den Eijnde, Professor of Tactical Design and one of the coordinators of the New Texeco

New Texeco is co-financed by Regieorgaan SIA, part of the New Texecoherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). For ArtEZ, this grant is a recognition of – and response to – the urgency of a transition to a sustainable society.

Throwback to the introductory meeting

The first introduction meeting was held on March 29th, organized by ArtEZ as the coordinating art academy. The purpose of the meeting was to meet each other, show workshops, testing equipment, and laboratories, and discuss the goals together. Thanks to a SPRONG subsidy, the New Texeco will be pooling and gathering knowledge on sustainability in the fashion and textile industry over the next eight years.

Among those present were researchers from the Sustainable & Functional Textiles research group of Saxion and the Fashion & Technology research group of Amfi/Hva. In addition, representatives from partners such as Dutch Yarnery, New Order of Fashion, Leemans&Wicker, Studio Samira Boon, RijnIJssel, State of Fashion, and the municipality of Arnhem were also present. In the coming months, the organization of the program and the development of a logo and website will be set up, heading towards the official and festive kick-off on September 21st.
