Doing an exchange study at ArtEZ

Studying as an exchange student at ArtEZ is a unique opportunity to broaden your horizons and gain international experience. You can take part in an exchange if your home institution has an Erasmus+ agreement or other agreement with ArtEZ.

Registration and admission

Here you will find the programmes that accept exchange students. Some programmes only accept exchange students in certain semesters or years.

Several ArtEZ programmes are taught in Dutch. To enrol, you need to meet our required level of Dutch comprehension and speaking skills. The programme information page shows which programmes are taught in Dutch and English.

Most of our partner institutes take part in the Erasmus+ programme. We also have partnerships with non-EU institutes outside this programme. Exchange students can come to ArtEZ, and ArtEZ students can study abroad in return.

You’ll find information on our partner institutes below:

- Architecture partner institutes

- Art & Design partner institutes

- Music partner institutes

- Theatre & Dance partner institutes

Your institute will need to nominate you for an exchange at ArtEZ. To do so, your institute must use our nomination form. We do not accept nominations by email. Each nominated student must submit their own form.

Nomination deadlines:

1 March for the autumn semester (September-January) or full academic year

1 October for the spring semester (February-July)

If your institute has any questions about exchanges or the nomination procedure, they can contact us at exchanges@artez.nl.

Your institute must nominate you before you can apply to ArtEZ. Once your nomination is submitted, we will send you a link to our Application tool. This tool also contains more information about the application requirements, which differ depending on the programme you enrol in.

Application deadlines:

1 April for the autumn semester or full academic year

1 October for the spring semester

Being nominated and applying does not guarantee placement. After the deadline, we review every application. Acceptance depends on the quality of your application and the number of places available.

If you are accepted at ArtEZ, you will receive a letter of admission. This letter includes the contact details of the department where you will be studying.

You can then create your learning agreement and choose the subjects you want to follow during your exchange.

There are a few practical things to arrange after being admitted to ArtEZ, such as accommodation and insurance. For more details, see our exchange brochure

We are currently developing our programme catalogue. If you’d like more information about the curriculum, please contact your chosen programme. You can find contact details on the programmes page.

We make sure that your ECTS credits from studying abroad or virtual mobility count towards fulfilling the requirements of your programme. We also ensure they are transferred as soon as possible and reflect your level.

The credits you earn are based on your learning agreement and an official transcript. You do not need to complete extra work or take a reassessment.

The Dutch grading system may differ from the system used in your country. The scale runs from 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest grade, 10 the highest and 5.5 (rounded to 6) considered a pass.

Grades are distributed according to how often each grade is awarded (at programme, faculty or even university level) over the past three to five years. This is shown as a percentage frequency.

To convert a Dutch grade into your home system, compare the percentage range of the grade with the equivalent range in your own system.

Erasmus +

Erasmus+ is a grant from the European Union. It helps covers the costs of studying or doing an internship abroad for a limited period. If you are enrolled at one of ArtEZ partner institutes, you can take part in an exchange at ArtEZ for up to one year. It’s a great opportunity to gain new experiences, learn about the Netherlands and Dutch culture, and complete your stay with a certificate.

Staff from partner institutes may also be invited to teach at ArtEZ, and ArtEZ staff may teach at partner institutes.

Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE)

The Erasmus Charter for higher Education (ECHE) sets quality standards for higher education institutes that join the Erasmus+ programme.

To obtain an ECHE, institutes must meet criteria for international cooperation and the quality of their programmes. The charter is designed to improve higher education in Europe by:

  • promoting cooperation between institutes, and
  • supporting student and staff mobility.

The ECHE also provides access to funding for studying, training, teaching and international research. It is valid for seven years, from 2021 to the end of 2027.
