Xem Vermeij is a multimedia artist from The Hague. He has been a storyteller from a young age—it began in the schoolyard. While most children played, he memorised stories to share with friends. This urge to tell stories has never stopped and is now expressed in all his art forms. From theatre maker to independent artist, Xem tells the stories of people from our time.
In the narrative visual series "I hope you find me," he tells the story, in words and images, of young people who grew up in the Netherlands with multiple nationalities. He himself is Turkish and Dutch. He grew up in the Netherlands with his Dutch mother. Last year, he travelled to Istanbul to reconnect with his Turkish heritage after a long time. The trip had a profound impact on him, and upon returning home, he shared his story through art.
From that personal, valuable experience, the idea arose to tell the stories of other young people with multiple nationalities as well and to explore how their backgrounds have influenced their lives and identities. What shapes you, what do you feel, where can you find yourself?
Because sometimes we forget to look back at where we come from and what shapes us.
