Veerle Brethouwer is a broadly developed performer, maker and educator, specializing in contemporary dance. In her practice she centers the humane, individual identity, and connection. As a professional she has a fascination for social safety and emotional and creative self expression, and researches how space for honest, non hierarchical relationships (both in the studio and outside) can support this.
As a performer, Veerle is dynamic, fiery, fluid and raw. She constantly shifts between her search for her uniqueness and sincerity, and connection with the audience. This also reflects in her approach to choreographing.
In her graduation research, she dived into themes like social safety and emotional and creative self expression. These themes make up the core of her artistic and pedagogical practice. As a maker and teacher, Veerle always works from a place of personal connections and the uniqueness of each dancer. She believes in a method in which authenticity, mutual trust and the voice of the individual have space.
During her internship at Shishani & Sisterhood, she deepened her development as an interdisciplinary performer, where movement, music and performance cross paths. With that, her work does not exist within limited boundaries, but it searches for different forms in which different disciplines can enhance and deepen each other.
With this knowledge and experience she enters the working field as a multi-faced, passionate and researching professional, in which she’s constantly looking for deeper connection. Connection with dancers, makers, students, her craft, and herself.
