Sterre Nuhn

Sterre Nuhn (2002) is an illustrator and visual artist. Nature is one of her greatest sources of inspiration and a recurring theme in her work. To feed that inspiration, she often heads outside to gather reference material as a starting point for making paintings and drawings.

In her work, she is almost always searching to capture a mysterious atmosphere in which a sense of comfort and unease come together. In her graduation work 'Schemering' ('Twilight'), Sterre delves deeper into this atmosphere with a series of individual images that together form a story set in a dark forest. A forest that is eerie and ominous, yet at the same time feels peaceful and familiar. As a viewer "walking" through it, you encounter all kinds of strange things: from tiny beetles to large trees looking back at you, from dense fog to open plains.

Alongside this mysterious atmosphere, themes such as nostalgia, mythology, and transience also play a role in the work. How does your view of the world around you change as you grow older, and what do memories look like? This and more is explored by Sterre in a series of pencil drawings, paintings, photographs, and tetra prints. She zooms in on small things you might normally overlook. She also tries to capture fleeting moments in the forest, interspersed with things that have existed for a very long time. The work is characterized by muted and predominantly cool colors. It is often true to nature but sometimes leans toward abstraction, creating a world somewhere between reality, memory, and dreams.
