Sofie de Haas is an image-maker who, in her work, seeks a balance between depth and playfulness. She processes vulnerable and personal themes into her imagery in an intuitive way, with plenty of color and a diverse use of materials.

Among other things, she works with paper, cardboard and textile in combination with drawing and painting. Reusing materials plays an important role in this. Old paper is incorporated into multiple works, and all the fabrics consist of things such as old sheets, garments and pillowcases. This is a sustainable working method that at the same time forms an invitation to play with what is already present, and which also connects to the graduation theme Playing with Chaos.

The theme arose from Sofie's thesis research: Uncertainty in the Creative Making Process. She discovered that uncertainty stems from "not knowing," which can evoke a sense of chaos. At the same time, she discovered that when the chaos(situation) is embraced as part of the making process, it can turn into… play! This process has been translated into a "transformation cloth": a work in which abstract, loose components lead, in a low-threshold way, to new combinations and invite interaction.

In her work, Sofie hopes to convey a certain openness and beauty to life, including precisely the imperfections that come with it. She wants to create work through playing, often also discovering surprises along the way in the process.

But… alongside the play, critical voices can also be heard, and attentive eyes are also present…
