With my installation, Subcutaneous, I invite you to experience and touch obsessive thoughts and behaviours. Obsession is persistent: it creeps into recurring thoughts and actions, often unnoticed by others. It plays out both internally and externally: in repetitive gestures and in thoughts that keep ruminating. Obsession is a way to maintain control over a world that can sometimes feel very chaotic.
In six short videos, I show actions that usually remain hidden. The work originated from my own experience with obsession, from simple actions to getting stuck in everyday life.
As an artist, I use art as a way of processing. My work always begins with a story or personal experience, something that gnaws at me and that I need to address. This often makes my process intense and sometimes even a journey in itself. In this work, it was the shame I felt about my obsession that I wanted to release.
I enjoy working with paper and am also a photographer, so I know how powerful images can be in an installation. With my work, I want to give the audience an experience that lets them feel how coercion works and perhaps even sparks a conversation. It's okay to share this and talk about it.
Onderhuids is a place to feel, discover, and reflect on a world that often remains beneath the surface.
