Music Therapy

Many musicians who choose to study Music Therapy have the ambition to do more with their musicality than just perform. They want to use music to make a difference to others. After years of study and internships within the Bachelor's programme in Music Therapy, they know better than anyone how music can connect people and how it can serve as a powerful link between them. With their degrees in hand, these graduating students are ready to make their mark in the field of music therapy.

In the Bachelor's programme in Music Therapy, you ultimately graduate with a thesis presentation and musical final production. There are many different options and routes to follow in the graduation process, such as internships at various locations, from schools to homes and hospitals. Traditionally, fourth-year Music Therapy students create a musical final production.

For her final project for her bachelor's degree in Music Therapy, Wies Gerritsen Mulkes developed a songwriting module for children with cerebral palsy. These children suffered brain damage during birth. Together with Wies, they work on regulating emotions such as frustration and anger. These are feelings that the children often experience. Wies now uses what she experiences while making music in her work as a music therapist. Music here does not arise from a fixed pattern, but from improvisation and feeling. Just as Wies herself experiences it as a saxophonist.
