Dream, Think, Do

In my thesis, I explored how designers arrive at their most meaningful ideas. Two striking moments play a key role in this: the Eureka moment, when a solution suddenly and unexpectedly comes to you, and the Flow state, when you are fully absorbed in a task with deep concentration and focus.

Both states feel powerful and clear, but they often arise unconsciously. I wanted to understand what happens in our brains during these moments, which circumstances stimulate them, and what might be hindering them—such as distraction, performance pressure, or a lack of rest.

What has become particularly fascinating to me in recent years is the creative process itself. Why are some moments so clear and productive, while others can be so difficult?

(Un)Conscious Creation

That led to this project: (Un)Conscious Creation. A visual exploration of peak moments of creativity, the sudden Eureka moment, and the profound concentration of Flow. On the one hand, I inform designers about the workings of their own creative process, how distractions and digital stimuli hinder peak moments, and which circumstances actually lead to spontaneous breakthroughs and optimal concentration. The guide guides you through pitfalls and opportunities, so you can work more consciously in practice.

On the other hand, I want to make the emotional experience of Eureka moments and Flow states tangible, through visual metaphors that evoke the euphoria, wonder, and surprise that accompany these states. In this way, I hope to inspire and amaze by offering insight into my visualisation of these processes.

At a time when technology is rapidly changing our field, I wanted to get back to the core: the unique human capacity for creative thinking. With this work, I hope to inspire others to be more mindful of their own creative peaks—and to rediscover the value of truly immersing yourself in what you create.
