Hello!
My name is Lyske van der Brug. I am a teacher, project manager, and creator. My background is in graphic design, and I have a love of typography. This is reflected clearly in my educational work.
In my free arts classes, I created work based on my love of nature and fascination with death. I worked with natural residual materials, such as pellets and mole skins.
The work Mollify is made from mole skins. In my creative research, I explored the process "from animal to material." I researched and tested different methods of tanning hides and processing furs. In Mollify, all these skins come together.
The title refers to the tension inherent in the work: the allure of the soft material and the discomfort it can evoke. Would you like to literally experience this softening? I invite you to pet Mollify.
The moles used died in the most humane way possible. No animals were killed for the art; the hides were collected from an existing practice and brought back to life with care and respect in this work.
One of the modules I created is "Tape with Persuasion," in which I incorporated NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) into a curriculum to enhance personal leadership in students. In a series of 5 to 6 lessons, students work from their own limiting beliefs to a supportive belief. The students express this by creating a protest sign with letters made of tape.
