Liefke Chef Gelissen (she/her, 1998) is a writer and multimedia creator. Experiment, ugliness, and human discomfort define her work. She connects her creative work with the neighbourhood by participating in the waste collection club, among other things. She is also the initiator of Crip Feest, a COVID-safe party where people with disabilities can dance and meet each other.
"Prince Sal" is a novella about a protagonist named Sal. Sal's core business is a lack of ambition. As long as he can keep his job at the snack bar, he's happy. And a hot girl wouldn't hurt either.
The novella centres on themes such as masculinity, friendship, and taking responsibility for one's actions.
Excerpt:
I slowly open my eyes. I have a splitting headache. Where am I? I don't recognise my surroundings at first. The last thing I remember is walking into the restroom, but this doesn't look like a restroom. I'm lying on an uncomfortable bed. I struggle to keep my eyes open; the light is so bright in here.
I can vaguely see someone walking towards my bed.
"So," someone says, "you've come to."
"What? Where am I?"
"You're in the emergency room. We picked you up when you fainted. And my name is Jan, by the way."
"Fainted?"
"Yes, probably from dehydration."
"But... I just had something to drink."
"Apparently not enough, because you had clear signs of dehydration," Jan answers.
"But what's your name?"
"My name is S-Karel."
"Skarel?" Jan asks, surprised.
"No... just Karel."
