Who are you as a teacher and creator?

Lex Buskens is a young, energetic creator who focuses on the physical side of theatre. Physical expression is his craft and his strength. His experience in the mime program at the Amsterdam University of the Arts and as an Artist-Educator at ArtEZ in Zwolle makes him a versatile artist. Besides his own performances, Lex is also active as a performer and creator in productions by TG Plakband, which he co-founded. He also works as a teacher at Kazou, a theatre workshop for people with autism. Lex never stands still, both literally and figuratively. He intends to continue learning throughout his career, which keeps his lessons and performances fresh and relevant.

What inspires or fascinates you?

I'm very inspired by visual art and literature.

What are your ambitions and desires for the future?

I hope to appeal to young people with my art. I want to move away from the grey, traditional theatre audience. It's a fantastic profession, and it can really resonate with younger generations who crave connection. A generation that wants to feel heard and seen.

Tell us something about your research.

The research begins with George Orwell's book Animal Farm, which I'm adapting for my Finals presentation. In my essay, you'll follow me through a series of adaptations made over the past 80 years. A comic book, some films, and, of course, the theatre. Together, we will experience how the familiar Animal Farm continues to reappear in different disciplines, zeitgeists, and hands – and what that says about the political and historical relevance of art within a society.

Internships

Following a third-year internship, I started working as a freelancer at Theaterwerkplaats Kazou. Here, I teach theatre and dance to people with autism.
