A Good Day To Notice

Mass produced items surround us at all times, with us being so used to these items they are easily overlooked and frowned upon. Yet these items could be compositions on their own, when reframed in a different spotlight. Their shapes, textures and accidental placements often carry a quiet beauty that only becomes visible once we slow down enough to pay attention. Objects that seem insignificant in daily life can suddenly feel sculptural, humorous or poetic when isolated from their original function and context.

For me a good day is: noticing a trail of paint on the sidewalk leaking from someone’s bucket, documenting misplaced objects, photographing the unusual situations in a city, noticing small details that could be blown up into something bigger, translating an idea into something tangible with the help of machinery and crafts, going out for a bike ride when the sun’s out and it’s neither too hot or too cold. A good day is also allowing curiosity to shape the way I look at everyday environments, finding unexpected compositions in ordinary routines and discovering moments that would normally disappear unnoticed.

ALS DE KAT VAN HUIS IS DANSEN DE MUIZEN OP TAFEL, focuses on the banality of objects and situations, by carefully looking at and reframing what’s already there. While objects get used and thrown out, we subconsciously create compositions by stacking, repositioning and by doing the dishes. In this project these ordinary accidental compositions get celebrated rather than being glanced over.

My practice revolves around a hands-on working method, creating realistic copies of objects. By scaling up, stacking and playing with compositions, change of texture and translations into different materials I question these items and their context. Through these interventions, familiar objects become unfamiliar again, creating a different view towards the unnoticed details of everyday life.
