The Garden as a Home

In a world where we increasingly live in controlled indoor spaces, we are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature. This distance can impact our well-being and lead to stress, burnout, and a disrupted natural rhythm.

As a designer, I strive to strengthen the connection between people and nature. My work explores how non-living natural elements—such as wind, water, sunlight, and soil—can play an active role in architecture. Instead of protecting ourselves from this, I ask: how can we coexist with these abiotic elements? And is this possible in an urban context, where little of this natural environment remains visible?

During my research, I discovered that by applying these elements in a flexible and sensory way, a conscious interaction arises between people and their environment. For example, do I choose to feel the wind, or do I only let in the sunlight? This choice makes you actively part of the natural processes around you.

For my graduation project, "The Garden as a Home," I am replacing a house in the centre of Rotterdam with a garden with dispersed living spaces. The residents literally live in their own garden. Spaces for everyday activities like cooking, washing, and sleeping are separated and connected by the outdoor space. This allows you to experience nature every time you move from one place to another.

Each space is designed to strengthen the connection with the place through abiotic elements. For example, the pool is situated in a pond at the Rotterdam water level (NAP 0), connecting you with the landscape. The ceiling above the sleeping area can be opened, allowing you to see the stars, feel the rain, or watch the clouds drift by.

Nature becomes not only visible but tangible. Residents are invited to rediscover their place on earth – physically, sensually, and consciously.
