Lars Roos (born 1999) is fascinated by what happens between people. Originally trained as a writer, he discovered in film a way to capture vulnerability and make genuine connections. His work begins with intuition, but is driven by dedication and curiosity. In his first documentary, he explores his own story, without yet knowing the endpoint. Lars creates space for the real, the unpolished—and manages to remain both director and human.

Inseparable

As a twin, you usually grow up in some form of symbiosis. You are addressed as "you" and respond with "we." From birth, you immediately realise that you are not unique, and simultaneously, the lifelong quest for your uniqueness begins—who are you in relation to that similar other?

The moment someone said to me, “Which one are you again?” it touched something in me I’d never felt before. As an identical twin, I’m often confused with my brother: in appearance, behaviour, even voice. What began as innocent confusion grew into a sense of invisibility. Who am I, apart from him? And why haven’t I used this subject, so close to me, in my artistic practice before?

That question sparked the development of my first personal documentary. Making a film was never my original dream (I trained as a writer), but when I got stuck with writing, I started experimenting with video. I noticed that film gave me something I’d lost in text: direct contact with people, capturing vulnerability, and playing with perspective. In previous video projects, I explored, among other things, everyday discomfort and the construction of emotion. What fascinated me most was the moment someone feels safe enough to reveal something of themselves. I discovered that in film, I could be both host and director: I create space, but also direct." Artistic research:

"Designing a documentary entirely by myself, from research to post-production, is a process in which choices must constantly be made. These choices form the core of this research. With this artistic research, I want to gain insight into how I, as a filmmaker, shape my film, and how the decisions I make during the various phases—research, filming, and editing—influence the final film. The goal is to analyse my personal process: what obstacles do I encounter, how do I resolve them, and what does that reveal about my style, my position, and my vision?

So, my main question became, "How do I shape a personal documentary during my production process, and how do my choices during research, filming, and editing influence the final film?"
