Space for recovery

Hi! My name is Klaske Griffioen, and I would like to take you through my graduation project. In my work, the relationship between people and space is central. I am fascinated by the way an environment influences how people feel, move, and find moments of calm. Within youth care, there is often a tension between recovery and wellbeing. Many facilities are designed primarily around functionality rather than emotional needs, resulting in environments that can feel cold and institutional. Instead of supporting recovery, these spaces may create discomfort and resistance.

For my graduation project, I explore how interior design can contribute to calmness, safety, and recovery for young people in youth addiction care. Through conversations, research, and design experimentation, I search for spatial solutions that can positively influence the daily lives of these young people. Sensory experience, natural materials, movement, and the freedom to make personal choices play an important role in this process

The design is structured around different zones within an open layout. This approach gives patients the freedom to choose where they want to be, depending on their needs at any given moment. By offering choice and autonomy, the environment reduces the feeling of constant supervision and creates a more comfortable and supportive atmosphere.

My design is characterized by a human centered approach, attention to detail, and a strong interest in the emotional impact of space. I believe that good design is not only something that can be seen, but above all something that can be felt. Through this project, I aim to demonstrate how interior design can help create an environment in which young people feel seen, safe, and supported throughout their recovery journey.
