Joren Boersma

From a young age, Joren Boersma has been inspired by films and TV shows that spark his imagination. Drawing was the way young Joren brought his fantasy to life, something that's still evident in his work. Science fiction films and TV shows, in particular, inspire him because they depict worlds with a certain credibility that makes Joren wonder what else is possible. That's why he researched the credibility of fictional worlds in his thesis.

To test his findings, he created a graphic novel titled "Monark" for his graduation project, in which he created his own fictional world. He hopes this will convey his appreciation for fiction to the viewer. The goal of this book is not to reveal too much of that world. In his images, he seeks a balance between abstraction and familiarity, and between unity and individuality. Joren hopes that this gives the viewer the freedom to fill in the blanks themselves and thus connect with their own imagination.

LEGO print plays an important role in his images. These graphic elements create cohesion in the book, while often contrasting with their surroundings. They form a common thread, though it's not entirely clear why.
