It's a girl

In a time when the oppression of women is still commonplace, as a creator, I try to visualise the inner journey it evokes.

How do you relate to a world that has already filled in so much for you, even before you could speak?

What effect does it have on your identity, on the shaping of your womanhood, when expectations are imposed on you from birth?

As Simone de Beauvoir wrote: “One is not born a woman, but formed into one.” That formation is not a linear process. It is layered, sometimes confusing, and full of contradictory movements between strength and surrender, doubt and conviction.

With this installation, I don't show clear images of oppression. Instead, it moves between physicality and emotion, between stillness and repetition. Cloths hang from chains, wetted, dried, and re-wetted—like a cycle of resistance and surrender.

The work lives, changes, breathes. It doesn't attempt to pass judgment, but rather to make something tangible: what it's like to be a woman in a world that still dictates what that means.

The title "It's a Girl" sounds innocent, but therein lies its gravity: the starting point of a life colored from the outset by expectations that don't apply to everyone.

The work doesn't pose questions, but opens up a landscape in which you can ask them yourself.
