Enya Heijmer is an illustrator and maker with a fascination for various materials, which she uses extensively. Her love for film and theater translates into making cardboard sets that she uses to tell her stories. Within these sets, she plays with the vulnerability and versatility of materials. For instance, she contrasts the roughness of cardboard with the softness of charcoal, which contributes to the mysterious and nostalgic atmosphere she wants to evoke in the viewer.
'Is dit mijn Thuis?' ('Is This My Home?') is a mixed-media installation consisting of, among other things, projections, cardboard sets, and charcoal drawings. Within the installation, you follow a character who returns to her home after a long time, where she discovers that everything has changed. You follow her on a quest to find out what a home actually is, in which she learns to accept that not everything can always stay the same. In this way, you are immersed for a while in a story about growing older, finding your place in the world, and searching for a home in places that once felt familiar. The story originated from a poem Enya wrote two years ago about a walk she took past the house where she was born, and all the changes she observed there in places that once felt familiar. In this way, the theme of "home" is not only personal, but also relevant in a world in which having a home is not something everyone can take for granted.
