When the war between Ukraine and Russia broke out, I found it difficult to follow the news; mentally, it was too painful, and I felt helpless. So I tried to avoid news about the war as much as possible. In essence, I was emotionally avoiding the news.
I am no longer an emotional news-avoider myself, but there are still many others who do avoid the news, which made me wonder whether they are sufficiently informed to make conscious choices about what is going on in the world.
The project “Looking away is a privilege” asks the viewer to place the panels opposite another viewer. The panels do not provide answers on how to become more involved in the news, but invite dialogue. This allows dialogues to arise between different visitors, between the panels, and also between the visitor and themselves.
