Regionaal Voedsellab

Four years of design research into regions, buildings and places

By Txell Blanco and Noël van Dooren

In the course Onderzoek (Research), which this publication reports on, a specific kind of spatial research is carried out. This spatial research is supported by the lectures Onderzoeksvaardigheden (Research Skills) and Onderzoeksbeschouwing (Research Reflection). The structure builds on the way in which ArtEZ Academie van Bouwkunst participated in educational projects within the network professorship Future Urban Regions (FUR, 2013–2020). In the final year of FUR, the theme ‘regional food lab’ was addressed for the first time.

Besides its grounding in FUR—embodied in lecturer Txell Diaz Blanco—the ‘regional food lab’ was also linked to the professorship Duurzame Voedselsystemen in Stedelijke Regio’s (Sustainable Food Systems in Urban Regions), held by Noël van Dooren at Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein. Even after both professorships concluded, Txell and Noël continued developing the ‘regional food lab’ within the master’s programme Architecture.

At the core of this programme is the question of how we can organise the food supply of an urban region or district in a regional and sustainable way—and which spatial challenges arise in doing so. This publication looks back on the three iterations (2019–2022) in which this topic was explored.
