On Monday 30 June 2025, ArtEZ marked Keti Koti / Dia di Abolishon, a day of remembrance, encounter and dialogue.
Through a joint programme, space was created for reflection and attention to the abolition of slavery and the ongoing impact of this history in the present.
The gathering began with opening remarks and an introduction by the directors of ArtEZ Academy of Theatre & Dance and Academy of Music, together with the project leads for Diversity and Inclusion. This was followed by a reflection on the Tambu workshops and a performance by Onias Landveld.
Outside, a guided dialogue took place at the Keti Koti Table, accompanied by music, rituals and conversation. The day concluded with a shared Heri Heri lunch, a Surinamese dish with roots in the time of slavery. It includes cassava, sweet potato, plantain, egg and salted fish. Sharing food is a way of honouring history and creating connection through food.
With this day, ArtEZ underlines the importance of awareness, shared stories and space for different perspectives.
