Within the architecture curriculum at ArtEZ Academie van Bouwkunst, design education holds a central position. Practising design trajectories, as done in the studios of the master’s programme Architecture, fulfils multiple roles for emerging architects. The studios follow a layered and sequential structure, encouraging students to build knowledge through specific exercises and research, to plan and allocate their attention and production capacity, to develop and pursue their own curiosity, and to gain confidence in their abilities. In the so-called ‘long studios’, which run from September until Christmas, there is ample space to carry out various thematically inspired (sub)exercises that help to inform and enrich a design.
