For Merlijn, a Fine Art student, making art is about personal development. It’s not just about the final work, but about what you discover about yourself in the process. What begins as an inner experience gradually takes shape in material form. He explores where inspiration really comes from, and in doing so gains a deeper understanding of himself.
From idea to form in the ceramics workshop
Merlijn’s way of working is intuitive. He doesn’t make sketches beforehand—or if he does, it’s in a different way: “My work is actually the sketch.” The process remains open, without a fixed plan or final image. That uncertainty is exactly what attracts him. You never quite know what will emerge.

For Merlijn, art is a way to see the world through someone else’s eyes. “It feels like a kind of window, you can really experience how someone else looks at the world.” That is what makes art so special: it is always a reflection of feeling, perception, and the way someone experiences reality.
