Second-year Crossmedia Design student Ruben Smit from AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design designed the awards for the annual Booster Festival. During the festival, several prizes were presented on behalf of Poppunt Overijssel, including the Talent Impact Prize, the Pop Prize and the award for Best Track.
The collaboration highlights how students from different ArtEZ programmes strengthen each other in practice. As part of his Crossmedia Design studies, Ruben worked on an assignment connected to the music industry, combining design, music and craftsmanship. A first-year student also contributed to the final result by helping engrave the names on the awards.
For the design, Ruben deliberately chose a minimalist and understated approach. Rather than creating large and expressive objects, he translated the meaning of the different awards into subtle shapes and materials. The Best Track award, for example, refers to the visual form of digital soundwaves, while the Pop Prize was given a more playful character.
'I wanted to create something very minimalist and calm, so I focused on the names of the awards'
Booster Festival is a platform for emerging musical talent from the eastern Netherlands and takes place annually in April. The festival is organised by Stichting Booster in collaboration with, among others, ArtEZ Conservatory in Enschede. During the festival, artists, makers and students are given the opportunity to develop their practice, expand their network and start new collaborations. Music lovers can attend free showcases featuring promising new acts.
