Being kinder to yourself with The Little Pit
- Design
In The Little Pit, Marit Latief tells the story of a girl learning to deal with the opinions of others. A story about growth and self-love: “I’m not really someone who wants to change the world. I mostly want to make something that makes people happy or inspired.”

Personal growth
With her finals work for the Comic Design programme, Marit creates an accessible world full of colour and emotion. The pit that grows in the story symbolises the beginning of self-compassion and the power of imagination.
She’s also seen herself grow over the past years: “After four years I know what I love: colour, ink and simple images, that way I can really keep going.” Although she didn’t consciously work towards a recognisable style, something distinctive developed along the way. To get there, she had to let go of what felt comfortable or easy.
“If I were to meet myself from four years ago, I’d say: get the most out of every assignment. Don’t play safe, just go for it!”
Just go for it!
During her studies, Marit was given space to explore, to fall and to try again. “What I mainly learned is: don’t judge yourself too quickly. Even if you don’t understand something right away, just do it.” And how does she hope her work will be seen in five years? “I hope people can tell it was made by a graduating student, and that I’ve grown. But most of all, that they see someone who loves to tell stories.”
