Every image by hand: Yvette creates stories with her animations
- Design
“I find imperfection a beautiful part of the process, it was made by a human hand and that shows.”
For her finals work, Yvette Bolder draws hundreds of images by hand. Frame by frame she places them on tracing paper, to then photograph, digitise and animate them.

The magic of animation
Yvette studies at the bachelor’s programme Animation Design. What’s special about this course at the Academy of Art & Design Zwolle is that students learn to create an animated film from direction to production. The whole process is covered.
The dream of being able to tell stories through animation started very early for Yvette: “When I was 16, I saw The Secret of Kells by Tom Moore at the cinema. It impressed me so much that I wanted to be able to create that effect in people too.”
In service of the story
To truly be able to tell her stories well, it was important for Yvette to let go: “Lecturers encourage you to work outside your comfort zone. Don’t try to fit into a certain style, doing that can get in the way of your growth.”
During her studies, she experimented with different techniques. In doing so, she discovered her own way of storytelling.
In this, style and technique contribute to what she wants to show: “If you were to look at my work, you might think I have a recognisable style, but I’m not really concerned with that. This is how I draw comfortably, in service of the story.”
You can catch a sneak peek of the work in her video portrait:
In her graduation film, Yvette takes viewers into another world, just like she was swept away when she watched The Secret of Kells.
