Bamboo Lignin Logic

Tropical hardwood used for construction and interior design causes considerable damage to vulnerable tropical forests (deforestation, nutrient extraction, irreplaceable damage to biodiversity and animal life, undesirable working conditions for local workers). Bamboo seems to be a good alternative, but it is mainly imported from Asia with a negative impact on the footprint of bamboo products.

As a useful alternative to Asian bamboo and tropical hardwood, European-grown bamboo is believed to reduce the negative footprint significantly. BambooLogic is the first large-scale bamboo producer in Europe and wants to use this natural material for sustainable value chains for textiles, interior and construction. The company approached the professorship for research into the possibilities of sustainable applications for the binding agent lignin from European bamboo. In this way BambooLogic tries to extract ecologically and economically sustainable value from the fibres, the extraordinarily strong stems and the lignin. Stichting Hout Research tests the research results and MA students from Wageningen University & Research conduct theoretical sub-studies.

This SIA KIEM project formed the basis for SIA RAAK SME application Bamboo Europe. Towards a sustainable value chain for European bamboo in partnership with. BambooLogic, Bambooder, Beckering Design, BSM Factory, Inducoat, Miscancell, Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, Studio Hanna Kooistra, Studio Joris de Groot, Studio Metmet, Dutch Bamboo Foundation, Fedecom, Stichting Hout Research, Wageningen University & Research.
