Research at ArtEZ is about who we are - both as individuals and as part of the collective. As a critical, collaborative, and creative community where researchers and students come together, we address urgent questions and trends of our time. Our research themes focus on urgent societal issues of our time. Through publications, events, research projects, and student-focused activities, we tackle these issues.

At ArtEZ, research is conducted in part within our professorships, which closely collaborate with our students, lecturers, and courses. But it doesn't stop there: our professorships actively engage with societal partners, research institutions, designers, and critical thinkers beyond the boundaries of ArtEZ. Research by and for students
At ArtEZ, there is ample room for research, not just for our professorships but also for students. In every course, from bachelor to master's level, conducting research is integrated into the curriculum. Think of theory classes, material research, socially engaged research. But also, outside the regular class hours, there is an opportunity to delve deeper into (artistic) research.

A lively research community flourishes by providing space for many different forms of research, by developing a curious and critical attitude, by changing perspectives and by testing your own research against that of others. At ArtEZ, this happens in projects, publications and programmes of:
Professional Doctorate
In addition to a bachelor's or master's degree, HBO (Higher Professional Education) has introduced a third learning trajectory since 2023: a professional doctorate (PD). A Professional Doctorate is of an equivalent level to a university PhD but has a different nature and carries a different internationally recognized title: PD. At ArtEZ, Chinouk Filique de Miranda is the first PD candidate. She will commence her research on digital literacy in fashion in September 2023.
Research Integrity at ArtEZ
Seven universities of the arts in the Netherlands, including ArtEZ, have joined forces and established a joint Committee for Scientific Integrity. The committee has been created to ensure a working environment in which adequate research practices are followed, as this is an essential prerequisite for integrity in research. By working together, a broad expertise in practice-based research in the arts is effectively represented and expanded.
