Preparatory Programmes Academy of Music Zwolle

ArtEZ Connected Zwolle

Are you still in school and do you enjoy making music? During ArtEZ Connected, you get a unique opportunity to discover whether a music programme might be right for you. Over three years – or shorter if you prefer – you take lessons at your own school and at ArtEZ.

The preparatory programme at your own (music) school

For ArtEZ Connected, you do not need to be a perfect musician yet. What you need is a passion for music, an open mind and musical curiosity. With ArtEZ Connected, you discover whether studying at a conservatory in Arnhem, Enschede or Zwolle suits you, while increasing your chances of being admitted.

This preparatory programme is offered at several participating schools. After completing the programme, you will know whether a music degree is right for you, and you increase your chances of being admitted to one of our (preparatory) programmes. Within ArtEZ Connected in Zwolle, you can choose from Jazz & Pop and Classical Music.

The programme consists of:

  • Weekly music theory lessons taught by a music teacher at your own school. These lessons prepare you for the admission level of the ArtEZ Academy of Music
  • Three main subject lessons at the ArtEZ Academy of Music (in addition to regular vocal/instrumental lessons from your own music school or private teacher)
  • Participation in the preparatory choir
  • Possibility to take part in collaborative projects of the Music Preparatory Programme (assessed on an individual basis)
  • Parent meetings (for secondary-school pupils)
  • Transition auditions at ArtEZ
  • Student performance evenings within and outside the conservatory

The programme may vary slightly per school.

Final music theory exam

At the end of the preparatory programme, you take a music theory exam at the ArtEZ Academy of Music. If you pass, you receive a certificate that grants you admission for the theory component at the ArtEZ Academy of Music. This certificate is valid for one year.

Transition auditions: Each year, you perform for a committee that assesses your progress. The theory lecturer and your music school or private teacher are also involved in the progress report.

Admission

Admission is possible from the second year of havo/vwo or vmbo-t. Admission exams take place in June. During the exam at ArtEZ, you perform repertoire you have prepared in advance. Admission consists of two parts: a theoretical part (music theory) and a practical part: the audition. The audition differs per specialisation.

1. Admission requirements – Music Theory

The theory admission test assesses whether your musical ear is sufficiently developed to start the preparatory programme.

You complete a series of simple exercises:
- Singing back a given pitch
- Singing back a melody
- Clapping back a rhythm
- Identifying how many notes sound simultaneously
- Working with notation: for example, you see a short melody and then hear a slightly altered version. You are asked to identify where the change occurs
- You may also be asked to perform simple rhythmic patterns at sight

You do not need to prepare anything for this test.

One important point: you should be able to read music to some extent. If you cannot yet read music, you must teach yourself before the test, possibly with help from your teacher.

2. Admission requirements – Audition

You perform 3 pieces that differ in character and tempo, including at least 1 étude and 2 recital pieces.

Specific admission requirements – Classical Music (Voice):
- You have a good, accurate singing voice that is naturally still developing – just like you.
- Ideally, you can already read music well and play an instrument.
- You are able to communicate clearly and tell your own story.
- You sing repertoire appropriate to your age and experience.
- You sing in 3 different languages.

Admission in group format. The admission consists of two parts: a solo audition and a group session. For the solo audition, you prepare two pieces of your choice that differ in character and tempo. You may bring your own accompanist. You do not need to prepare anything for the group session. Lecturers from the Academy of Music (the committee) and the other auditionees are present at the audition.
